THE place in the Dark Ages where you could proof not to be a witch, without having to drown or burn first. At "de Heksenwaag" you can still get your weightcertificate to proof you are to heavy to fly!
Nice museum to visit, also with kids. The witches scales. The scales are in the public weigh house, a Renaissance building with a stepped gable and brick mosaic tympanums. In the 16C, women suspected of witchcraft were brought here from afar to be weighed in the presence of the bourgmestre: if their weight was not too low in relation to their height, it was calculated that they could not sit astride a broomstick and they were acquitted... the last acquittal certificate dates from 1729! The storehouse now contains a museum on the history of witchcraft.

Oudewater is a beautiful little town. By car it is 15 minutes, by bike it is 45 minutes (beautiful route).
