Why locals recommend it
Constantly bustling -- people use the square mostly as a space to relax and soak up a bit of sun, and to wallow in the atmosphere created by the surrounding cable cars, hotels and shoppers. Great for people watching! There is free wi-fi provided by the city. Look under the leaves of the greenery in the planters, and you'll find a few power outlets for your laptop.

Tips from locals
The tourist and retail “heart” of the city. It’s worth wandering through the plaza just to see the cable cars, which can be found on Powell St. although it’s more touristy, it’s centrally located with great access to public transit, and with some wonderfully cozy bars.
There's still lots of shopping around here (Apple Store, clothes, etc.). The cable care is also fun to take from the Powell Street MUNI station.
Today, this one-block plaza and surrounding area is one of the largest collections of department stores, upscale boutiques, gift shops, art galleries, and beauty salons in the United States, making Union Square a major tourist destination and a well-known gathering place in downtown San Francisco.
