Tips from locals
Víðgelmir in Borgajford is the largest of all caves in Iceland, 148,000 cubic metres, and one of the largest lava caves in the world. It has beautiful ice formations and deep inside there are lava stalactites and stalagmites. Bones and jewelry from the viking age are a part of the archeological remains found in the cave in 1993.
Víðgelmir is one of the best preserved caves of the well known caves in Iceland. This is due to ice buildup during the 1960s finally closed off the only access into Víðgelmir in 1972.The cave was reopened in 1994 and closed for public until recently. As such you will still find lava formations that long since have been destroyed in other well known caves. You book a 1.5-hour tour into the cave and they start several tours daily. We highly recommend this tour both for adults and kids. The cave is very colorful and it is a unique experience.
