Muiderslot (40mins) or Amsterdam Castle has been a national museum since 1878. Before then, the castle was completely dilapidated and even came close to being demolished. Fortunately that never happened because King William I got involved. In 1878, the castle became one of the first national museums in the Netherlands. The castle was renovated thoroughly by the architect Pierre Cuypers, whom you may know from Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and Amsterdam Central Station.

The Muiderslot is a medieval castle in good condition in nearby Muiden, built around 1285, restored to its former glory from 1370 and a Rijksmuseum since 1878. According to historian Maarten van Rossem, the "fairytale castle" looks like a castle should look like: "Walt Disney would also have been very satisfied with it." More information: www.muiderslot.nl
The castle was built in 1370 and offers some tours within the castle. Also for children this can be interesting.
