Los Haitises National Park is one of the crown jewels of the system of national parks in the Dominican Republic. Los Haitises means "mountainous land" in Taino, and the Park nurtures one of the few remaining tropical forests on the island. The park, which also has extensive mangroves, covers an area of 1,600 km² (618 square miles). A natural wonder full of many keys and caves, the jungle there was used as a place for the movie Jurassic Park. It is easy to locate the Ridgway Falcon in danger of extinction, the Hispaniolan Piculet, the Hispaniolan Carpenter, the Spanish Emerald, the pelicans, the frigate birds, the herons and many other majestic birds in flight.
