Hunter Mountain is the second tallest mountain in the Catskills, and hiking it is no easy feat. Hunter Mountain via Spruceton Horse Trail is a 9.1-mile hike and is rated difficult. On the way up, the trail gets rocky, but it's also well-marked. This is a looped trail, and also works in reverse.
multiple trail options, but an easy family-friendly one is to enter at the end of Spruceton Road and you'll walk 2 miles max to a small waterfall area with bridge. you can climb down and wade in the water. great for kids. multiple options to continue hiking, if everyone is up for it.
The hike is easy for the experienced hikers but you will be climbing uphill the whole time. You feel the climate changes towards the summit and gets very windy and cold. Medium hike.
The highest and among the more challenging peaks in the Catskills. Great views from the summit's fire tower. Weather shifts quickly in the mountains so be sure to bring plenty of drinking water, waterproof gear, layers to pack and maybe a dry shirt to change into at the summit. You will be sweating! Also, the trail gets fairly steep at the summit. Recommended for hikers with some experience.
