Just 15 mins on from Moncontour is Lamballe, a gem of a place – like a mini-Dinan but closer and easier to get around! There’s a big market on a Thursday morning but otherwise we would advise parking in the main square and wander into the centre of the town – which has many beautiful artisan shops, restaurants and cafes and beautiful medieval buildings Great for an evening apéritif or meal on the way back from Pléneuf-Val-André. The Haras de Lamballe is worth visiting for pony-loving children – an educational centre with horse-drawn carriage rides and stud farm.

At 32 km Lamballe features a really bustling traditional Thursday market where locally produced items including home-grown vegetables, excellent pork products, honey, cider and a range of craft goods can be found. The famous Harass breeds Breton horses and offers regular guided public tours and displays and is the venue for various fetes, bric-a-brac sales and festive markets. Art and history museums can both be found here, along with lots of places to eat.
