We have found a FREE trail, to the left just before the entrance to the Royal Gorge grounds that have a tourist trap fee. if you want to avoid this make a left to a picnic area and trail with bathrooms about half a mile to a mile. you may walk the whole rim of the Gorge up there for free, it is absolutely beautiful, enjoy!
The Royal Gorge is a canyon of the Arkansas River located west of Cañon City, Colorado. The Royal Gorge Bridge was built in 1929 for visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of this geologic wonder. Suspended 956 feet over the Arkansas River. You definitely have to walk across the bridge!
The Royal Gorge bridge is about a 60 minute drive up thru Canon City and some beautiful mountain views. You can either go directly to the bridge and see it firsthand or go to the town of Royal Gorge and do a helicopter ride or whitewater tour.
In Canon City, the Royal Gorge Bridge & Park is home to America’s highest suspension bridge. The park has something for everyone. Drive the “back way” from Divide, via Teller 1 out of Florissant to Teller 11 and follow maps. It’s much more scenic, with less traffic usually. Stop in the Rock Shop on hwy 285 on your way in or out. If you like wine, visit The Winery at Holy Cross Abby in Canon City for wine tasting.
