Tips from locals
Kalamata has its own Castle, dominating a hill in its historic center, overseeing the area on a long radius, as was its original purpose.
Dominating the city, the Castle of Kalamata (or kastro) sits on a lush pine-covered hill. Geoffroi de Villehardouin, a Frank knight who conquered Achaea, constructed the structure in 1208. It boasts an impressive gate, and though dating from the 13th century, it miraculously survived the 1986 earthquake, responsible for the destruction of a major part of the city. A little haven of peace and serenity, the kastro is the best place to enjoy the sunset from a beautiful vantage point.

The castle is located in the northwestern part of the city of Kalamata, on a low rocky hill above the river Nedontas. Its foundation dates back to the Byzantine period, but its current form is due to its reconstruction by the Frankish prince and founder of the principality of Achaia, Godfrey I Villehardouin, in the early 13th century.
The point of reference par excellence in the city of Kalamata is the legendary “castle of Isabeau” where the renowned International Dance Festival takes place annually.
