Tips from locals
Famous trail where you will see a lot of locals and some runners even training for the Olympics. Go the entire route all the way up to the crest and bring the tram back down, or just go for a nice day hike.
Start at the trailhead and hike eight miles with a 5000' elevation increase to reach the Sandia peak. You can ride the tram from the peak down to the base if you want to avoid the round trip.
One of the most popular local trailheads in New Mexico which leads from the base of the Sandia mountains to the peak.
The La Luz trail will take you all the way up to Sandia Crest. If you’re up for a challenge it’s worth the trek. Drop a car off at the tram parking area then head over to the La Luz trail head. It’s nice to hike up La Luz then take the tram back down. I believe it’s 15.00 for a tram ride back down. But worth it. You will be plenty tired. Breathtaking views from the peak.
