Tips from locals
Beautiful hiking and biking trails through this state park that is nestled between the bay and the ocean. A little bit further south. Probably a good 30m+ drive.
The refuge was established June 6, 1938 as a crucial link along the Atlantic flyway, the migration route that takes birds from Summer breeding grounds in the North to Winter feeding grounds & rest. Educational programming is offered by park rangers. Best time to visit is late Fall/Winter when viewing birds. The trails are flat and easy to navigate. Make sure you bring your camera and if you're into birdwatching a spotting scope because there's always something to see or take a photo of.

A great place to learn about the Virginia Beach wildlife. Various trails and guided kayak tours are available.
Quiet and secluded, this national wildlife refuge has trails for biking and walking. Recommended for birders, runners who want to get in a long one and bike riders. Open March to October.
