Tips from locals
One of the coolest and most overlooked spots in SC! Totally untouched beach on a hammock island, that was once a rice plantation.
Botany Bay Plantation WMA includes 2,500 acres (1,000 ha) of marine and estuarine wetlands, including 2 miles (3 km) of beachfront used for nesting by endangered loggerhead sea turtles and least terns. It has a kayak launch and family fishing ponds. It is one of our favorite spots! Free. Closed Tuesdays.
UPDATE: Hurricane Matthew damaged Botany Bay pretty severely - do a bit of research to check if they've reopened before making the drive. If you have 2+ days and a car, Botany Bay is absolutely stunning. Drive around and explore, then park and walk to the water. They have steep fines for shelling, so everything is left as-is. Seemingly untouched.
Botany Bay is a stretch of pristine undisturbed beach on Edisto Island. It is a great visit for people who love nature.
