Tips from locals
Situated in the original cellars and warehouses of 1785, The Rum Story has carefully recreated the essence of time and place, from the misery of the crowded slave ships and life in the plantations, to the decadence of the punch houses. The attraction is a journey into Whitehaven's history as one of the busiest ports in Britain, as well as the history of how Rum came into these shores around the 1700's. The Vault can also be hired as a bespoke venue for up to 100 people.

Discover the dark spirit of Whitehaven, a port town once at the heart of the UK rum trade. The rum story takes you all the way to the Caribbean rainforest and the story of the slave trade, American prohibition, rum in the Royal Navy and the process of rum-making itself. It’s a fascinating museum and will take up many an hour of a rainy day. There’s a café and a shop there too.
