The Castello Visconteo, now an archaeological museum, is located on the edge of the old town and was built in the 12th century, probably as the residence of a Captain Orelli, who remained true to the Emperor. Today, only a fifth of the original structure remains and dates from the 15th and 16th centuries. Only the foundation remains from the original structure.

Ancora integro ed interessante testimone della storia del Locarnese, il Castello è situato nell'antico borgo, ospita il Museo conosciuto a livello internazionale per la rinomata collezione di vetri romani. Vari reperti archeologici risalenti all'epoca del bronzo e romana.

Der Ursprung des Schlosses in seiner ältesten Form ist ungewiss. Das jetzige Gebäude stammt vermutlich aus dem Jahre 1342, als das Castello vom Mailänder Machthaber Luchino Visconti erobert und ausgebaut wurde. Zwischen 1439 und 1466 wurde es von der Familie Rusca bewohnt, die bedeutende Festungsanlagen errichtete, die nicht nur das Schloss, sondern auch den Hafen schützen sollten und bis ans untere Ende der heutigen Via Franchino Rusca reichten. Nach dem Sieg der Eidgenossen im Jahre 1532 wurde die Burg zum grossen Teil geschleift. Von den fünf Türmen ist nur einer übriggeblieben. Das Castello nimmt heute das Städtische und das Archaologische Museum auf.
