Why locals recommend it
It’s warm and cozy inside with couches—it feels like a living room and it’s always had a vibe of inclusion that brought people together. There are zines, mostly used books, and an art gallery that’s always hosting local artists. We have music often and a monthly event called Brave New Jokes where comedians test out new material. In the ‘90s and ‘00s, artists from the Mission School hung out there—Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom, Barry McGee—I wonder if they did well because they all had one safe place to meet and not worry about things. If you become a member for $10 a month you get to pick out a free used book every month.
