Boyen Fortress – located around 1 hour drive from the cottage. It is a former Pursian fortress, the biggest monument in the Mazurian Lakes. It is located on a narrow isthmus between two large lakes of the Masurian Lake District Niegocin and Kisajno Lakes. Open May-June 9am-6pm, July-August 9am-8pm, September 9am-6pm. Prices: 12PLN adults, 7PLN children, children up to 7 years old free of charge.

The Boyen Fortress was built between 1844 and 1856 to protect the kingdom’s border with Russia, and was named after the then Prussian minister of war, General Hermann von Boyen. The fortress, which consists of several bastions and defensive towers surrounded by a moat, was continually modied and strengthened, and it successfully withstood Russian attacks during WWI. Inside the museum you’ll nd a scale model of the fortress and a few odd items, such as a section of wall with a Russian soldier painted on it, used as target practice by the Prussians.
