A unique church which was excavated inside the rock. This was a first church in Finland where soft cushions were installed on the benches. This created a lot of stir back in the day, it was almost a sin to sit comfortably in the church.
The Temppeliaukio Church, excavated in the rock, is located in the heart of Helsinki, at the end of Fredrikinkatu. Due to its unique architecture, the church, completed in 1969, is one of Helsinki's main attractions. The church hall is covered by a copper-clad dome, supported by rock beams on the rock walls. The inner walls are of rubble rock and quarry stone.
