Tips from locals
Kogan-ji Temple is known as Togenuki Jizoson. This temple first opened in 1596 in the Yushima, neighborhood of Ueno, Tokyo.
Sugamo is where the golden generation go to strut their styles :) You can enjoy Japanese traditional sweets and food, and atmosphere. Visiting Sugamo is best done on the 4th, 14th, and 24th, when local shops and restaurant put out stalls over the length of Jizo- dori street and the line at Koganji snakes out through the temple gates.
The small temple is home to the highly popular Togenuki Jizo statue which depicts the popular Jizo Bodhisattva and is thought to help heal ailments. People line up in a queue to wash the statue with small hand towels which they then press to their ailing body part in hope of relief.
