The museum is situated in the northeast wing of the Lazaristes Monastery complex that was built in 1861 by the monks of the order of Saint Vincent DePaul. It hosts the Costakis Collection, which includes 1.275 masterpieces of prominent Russian Avant Garde artists.
The museum organizes temporary contemporary art exhibitions along with exhibitions based on the George Costakis collection (artworks from the Russian Avan Garde period), in addition with exhibitions in rest of Greece and abroad.

Costaki collection and Russian Avant-Garde The permanent exhibition is the “Costaki” collection that includes more than 1200 masterpieces of Russian avant-garde artists covering a wide range of art movements. In 2013 the Museum celebrates 100 years since the birth of the Greek collector George Costakis. The museum is aiming to preserve and display precious works of contemporary art by Greek and foreign artists, to improve the public’s relation and appreciation towards modern art while promoting and improving art education. It also wishes to further develop scientific research related to issues surrounding the history and theory of contemporary art, as well as to provide help of academic standards to art historians and theoreticians who wish to specialize in museology.
