The Nidaros Cathedral / Nidarosdomen is perhaps the most known church in Norway. The construction of the cathedral started in the year 1070. Make sure to find out the opening hours if you want to buy a ticket to see the inside, but you surely can not go to Trondheim without seeing the outside. In the summer months, you can climb the tower. The 172 steps to the top are dark and narrow, but the climb is well worth it because you will be rewarded with an unrivalled view of the city centre.

Visiting Trondheim without going to the cathedral is like visiting Paris without climbing the Eiffel Tower. It is quite touristy and expensive, but for most people a must-do. And you can choose to admire it from the outside for free. If you go inside, I recommend to pay the extra 50 NOK to go up to the tower, with a great view of Trondheim.
Trondheim is the medieval center of Trondheim, Oslo does not have a cathedral actually. I married in this Gothic Cathedral back in 2002 and it is truly a not-to-be-missed spot. It was built to commemorate the first Christian king of Norway, Holy Olav, who died in a battle at Stiklestad in 1030 AD. If you visit in July you should experience the open air play in Verdal, two hours drive north of Trondheim.
